Prepping for 6 Months in Africa

December 26, 2015

I've signed up for a 6 month trip through Africa starting in Iceland, and tomorrow is the big day. The last things are packed and I'm ready to go!

Time for a new adventure, this time a road trip in an old Bedford truck with 15 other people (that I’ve never met before) through Africa with the first stop being Reykjavik, Iceland.

A lot of people have been pointing out to me that I might have misunderstood something as Iceland is not in Africa. Some people have also pointed out to me that it doesn’t really make sense to start a road trip on an island. I just think it makes the whole trip more fun!

A lot of people have also asked how much stuff I bring for such a long trip and how much I’m allowed to take on the truck. I actually have no idea how much I’m allowed to bring but I think the flight is going to set the limit, not the truck. There is however another more important factor that limits how much I’m bringing. At some point I’m going to have to carry everything, and walking around carrying a lot of crap that I don’t actually need is the perfect way to ruin any trip.

After several month-long trips I’ve gotten fairly good at not packing too much, and it doesn’t actually matter too much for what to pack if a trip is one month or six months. The trickiest part was clothes for all different climates as I’m expecting everything between -10°C and 40°C. With a lot of lightweight stuff and lots of layers I ended up going for the stuff in the picture above.

My goal was 15kg and with everything on the scale (including the clothes and shoes I’ll be flying in) it weighted in at 15.1kg. Close enough, I’m happy!
