Driving across Iceland

January 5, 2016

We're starting our journey from Reykjavik to South Africa by crossing over to the east coast of Iceland to take the ferry to Denmark. A beautiful drive along the Islandic south coast including waterfalls, glacier ice, and a viking village.

The first step of the journey from Reykjavik to Cape Town is to take the truck and cross Iceland to get to the only winter-time ferry to mainland Europe.

The truck we’re travelling in is an old Bedford truck, originally used by the British army, and built for pretty much any kind of road. It does do some roads better than others though and icy roads with a strong side-wind is not the best. With the drivers being new to the truck and icy roads it was decided that we should rent a car for the rest of the group for the Iceland part of the trip so the drivers don’t have to worry about people in the back.

The car is way faster than the truck so we had time for a few stops along the road. This resulted in some spectacular views of waterfall, bright blue glacier ice, and at one point even a viking village built up as a filming location. Apparently the village hasn’t even been used yet, it was only built to stand there and get weathered for future filmings.

During the last night before getting on the ferry we decided to head into the closest town for dinner and to stock up on food for the next couple of days. We’re talking about a few kilometers drive return. Apparently that was enough for the police to stop us and take us to the closest police station with the words “this is probably the most illegal vehicle I’ve ever seen”.

On the bright side though, we made the Islandic News
